Whoever thought of putting Diane Lane and Richard Gere together in a movie at this point in their careers is a genius.
Their pairing in "Nights in Rodanthe" is one of the best in a long while. They just look right together, like they belong with each other. It seems impossible that they would not fall in love.
Unfortunately, the story of "Nights in Rodanthe" does not quite do them justice. It is based on a book by Nicholas Sparks, and his books have a sameness to them, a simplicity of story and that one shared plot twist.
The story is evident from the moment the characters are introduced. Lane stars as a woman who is seriously thinking of allowing the husband who abandoned her for another woman to come back to her. While pondering this move, she agrees to look after a bizarrely designed bed-and-breakfast-and-dinner on the Outer Banks of North Carolina.
